Witów is a picturesque town in the Western Tatra Mountains, encompassing Chocho?owska Valley and Lejowa Valley, as well as the upper section of the Czarny Dunajec River at the foot of the Tatras. It is located in Ko?cielisko District, Tatrza?ski County.
The area of Witów is 65km ². It neighbours three other villages: Ko?cielisko and Dzianisz in the east, and Chocho?ów in the north. In the south and west it borders on Slovakia.
The origins of Witów go back to the turn of the 17th century. According to historical sources, the village was established in 1606. Its name comes from the name of Stanis?aw Witowski, an important royal official from Krakow.
Witów’s cultural attractions include the wooden Church of the Holy Mother, built between 1901 and 1910, with a neo-Gothic altar. The parish also includes St. Anne’s Chapel on P?azówka and St. John the Baptist’s Chapel in Chocho?owska Valley.
The road to the mines in Ko?cieliska Valley used to run through Witów. Thanks to its attractive location and charm, Witów is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. Another advantage is the fact that it has good road connections with Krakow and the region of Silesia (Katowice). Its mountain climate is healthy and good for sports. There are more and more skiing routes and other tourist facilities. And on top of that, Witów offers a breathtaking view of the Tatra Mountains.
